Gardening Education Program
Presenting...A season-long hands-on training course in organic vegetable gardening!

Are you someone....
  • who has never gardened before?
  • with a strong desire to learn how?
  • who has 3 or more hours/week to maintain your veggie garden?


When: Alternate Saturdays, May-September
Where: Near Ft Totten Metro Station (Red, Yellow, & Green Lines)

Instruction will include all aspects of starting and maintaining the garden, from testing and preparing the soil to planting, maintenance, and pest management. The instruction will be led by the NFI program coordinators and guest presenters.

What's included :
  • Your own 12'x12' community garden plot for the 2009 growing season
  • All seeds and transplants
  • Compost, soil amendments, wood chips, and their delivery
  • All necessary garden infrastructure (i.e. drip irrigation system, trellises, stakes, tomato cages)
  • Your own trowel and a pair of gloves, plus seasonal use of NFI's communal tools.
  • Bi-weekly hands-on classes to provide you with the knowledge you need to grow your organic garden!
  • Weekly "staffed" hours at the garden where participants can consult with experienced gardeners, and receive one-on-one assistance in applying class lessons and caring for your garden!

Community Supported Garden
Receive a bag of fresh organically-grown veggies every week throughout the growing season!

The remainder of NFI's growing area will be used to plant crops for our Community Supported Garden. The CSG will complement the Gardening Education Program by:
  • Increasing the variety of crops new gardeners will be exposed to
  • Offering additional opportunities to study pests and plant growth habits
  • Offering communal composting, space to grow "community" crops like melons, berries, squash, pumpkins
  • Offer demonstrations on cover-cropping, intercropping, undersowing
  • Demonstrate good organic gardening techniques to the overall garden community

Details: We offer the option to purchase either a FULL SHARE or a HALF SHARE in the CSG. Members will receive a grocery bag of organically grown seasonal veggies every week from June until the end of October. Two pickup points/dates available to choose from.




As required by the National Park Service, money collected by NFI programs is used solely for the recovery of cost for services provided.
